Summer is right around the corner! We’re so ready to roll up our iSUPs, pack our cars, and get out into the great wilderness—and Colorado is the perfect place to do just that.

From years of living and exploring in this state, here are our top five places to paddle board—read on to choose your next spot!

1. Cherry Creek Reservoir // 4201 S. Parker Road in Aurora, Colorado

Looking to stay close to Denver? No worries—grab your boards and head to Cherry Creek reservoir. With over 880 acres of water surface, you’ll be sure to find a secluded spot to paddle here – which is what we truly love about this destination. Note: There is an $9 daily entrance fee to the park.

2. Horsetooth Reservoir // West of Fort Collins

Horsetooth Reservoir isn’t exactly the most quiet and secluded spot, but the proximity to Fort Collins makes it super convenient. It boasts five wake-free coves that look over Lory State Park, and while you paddle you’ll be able to admire its rolling hills and rock outcroppings. Expect some motorized boat traffic through the central corridor, but there are plenty of smooth coves and areas that you can explore. Note: There is a $7 daily entrance fee, plus an additional $7 fee if you bring a trailer.

3. Grand Lake // NW of Denver

All hail Colorado’s largest and deepest lake! You’ll find plenty of SUP opportunities here—with some of the best scenery in the state, this spot is a no-brainer. Launch your board from Point Park or the Beach at Grand Lake for the best views of 12,000-foot Mt. Craig. And if you’re feeling balanced on your board, bring your fishing gear along—folks have been known to pull out huge rainbow, brown, and brook trout from these high alpine waters!

4. Lake Dillon // Summit County

Lake Dillon is home to many outdoor activities, including SUP! Full of wildlife, this lake will deliver stunning views of the Rockies, and there’s plenty of space to paddle around. There’s great camping in the area too, so escape for a weekend to fully experience the beauty! Note: Lake Dillon has some unpredictable wind patterns, so stick close to shore for the most enjoyable experience.

5. Bear Creek Lake // Lakewood

Bear Creek Lake Park gives you a 2 in 1 deal—there are two bodies of water, Big Soda Lake and Bear Creek Lake. BSL is restricted to non-motorized watercraft, so SUP-ing here is a great spot for beginners or those who want a calmer experience. BCL allows motorized boats (they must be less than 10 horsepower), so it’s perfect for intermediate to advanced paddlers. Note: There is a $10 entrance fee for this location to SUP in Colorado.
